Friends announce contest winners

Hamilton is fortunate to have aspiring and very talented young artists in our midst. Twenty-five entries from students in first through eighth grade in Hamilton ISD plus one home-schooler were selected from 294 exciting and colorful bookmarks in a contest sponsored by the Friends of the Hamilton Library in collaboration with Nancy Diaz, the library director, and Patricia Keoughan, Hamilton ISD art teacher.

The winners were chosen by grade, as follows.

First grade: Morgan Aing, first place; Jennifer Arteaga, second place; Chase Weaver and Jenny Mata, honorable mention.

Second grade: Taylor Long, first place; Hannah Keeling, second place; Annie Hubbard and Salma Olalde, honorable mention.

Third grade: Macie Parrish, first place; Sawyer Wright, second place; Canyon Thompson and Trinity Craig, honorable mention.

Fourth grade: Jennifer Coker, first place; Maggie Wenzel, second place; Jordan Luker [and Presley Haile], honorable mention.

Fifth grade: Harley Erwin, first place; Desiree Schneider, second place; Bailey Armstrong and Yajaira Rivas, honorable mention.

Junior High: Presley McNeely, first place; Brooke Tomlinson, second place; Rachel Denman, Emma Polster, Natasha Beeman, Lane Hall and Ashleigh Quinlan, honorable mention.

The first place winners each received a $25 check and an age appropriate book. Second place winners each got an age appropriate book and each honorable mention recipient received a notepad and a gel pen. Each of the winners got a printed certificate suitable for framing. All of the prizes were provided by the Friends of the Library.

The first and second place winning bookmark entries will be reproduced by Hamilton Printing and will include the name and grade of the artist on the back. The bookmarks will be on sale at the library with all of the proceeds benefitting [sic] Hamilton Public Library.

Debra Adams, the Friends' president, said, "This was a fun and really rewarding project. I was amazed at the creativity in the designs produced at all grade levels and the enthusiasm with which all of the grades involved participated. I can't thank Nancy Diaz and Patricia Keoughan enough for all the work they put into making this such a success."

Adams expressed her hope that people would take time to go by the library to see all of the bookmarks, which will be on display, and hopefully demonstrate their support for Hamilton's young artists and the library by buying the bookmarks to share with friends, family and other readers.
