Friends of the Hamilton Public Library

Welcome!

Purpose/Mission

To provide support for the Hamilton Public Library, encourage literacy and present programs of interest to the public.

History

The Friends of the Library was organized in 1984 and incorporated in 1991 exclusively for charitable, literary and educational purposes as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Specifically, the Friends of the Library provide financial assistance to the Hamilton Public Library; promote literacy and interest in and use of the library and present educational programs of interest to the community.

Officers

The Friends of the Library is governed by a board of directors led by a slate of officers elected on an annual basis. Our current officers include:

  • Kate Edwards, President
  • Shirley Smith, Secretary
  • Michael Langford, Treasurer

Programs

The FOL sponsors an annual Bookmark Contest for the youngsters in 1st - 6th grades in conjunction with Hamilton Ann Whitney Elementary's Art Department.

Annual Events

FOL members volunteer their time and talents in a variety of projects including annual fundraising events.  The Books and Butt book sale and pork butt sandwich event is held in the spring on the library grounds in collaboration with Kent Wenzel’s Lonestar Meats.  A huge book sale is held during the Pottsville EEC Holiday Market in the fall each year. Drawings for prizes and a Christmas card in the Hamilton Herald-News are additional fund-raisers.

Sales

Sales of books, children’s contest bookmarks and artist Joan Crumrine designed note cards help provide funds in support of the Hamilton Public Library and its programs.   FOL funds have been used to pay for children’s books, a storage facility, bike racks, tables, patron seating, the annual copy machine lease, fans, setback thermostats and many more goods and services for the Hamilton Public Library.
